Going Back to Work With Cancer

Jim Madden tells how going back to work helped him to get back to normal after being treated for Hodgkin's Disease.

'The first inkling I had that something was wrong was when I drank alcohol. Even a single glass of wine caused a slight pain in my shoulder. So I gave up, but two months later, with the first sip of wine, the pain returned and I decided to see my doctor.'

When he went to his GP, he was told that this sensation was quite normal in middle-aged asthmatics, so, reassured, he returned to his work as a college lecturer. But the pains continued so Jim went back to his GP who suggested a chest X-ray. Unfortunately, it was not until six weeks later that Jim finally went for his X-ray and was told by a worried-looking radiologist that he most probably had Hodgkin's Disease.

The radiologist didn't like to use the word 'cancer' because of its so-called connotations, yet Jim quickly realised it was cancer as the radiologist started to use words like 'chemotherapy' and 'radiotherapy'. However, the good news was that there was apparently a 70-80% chance of recovery. So Jim blithely rang his wife at work. Met with a stunned silence at the other end of the line, he started to wonder whether the radiologist's optimism was well founded.

Things then began to move very quickly. After an initial interview with two very grave looking consultants, who seemed to resemble 'friendly, but worried undertakers', Jim was rushed into one of the best hospitals for cancer treatment in London. A biopsy revealed the truth of the radiologist's diagnosis. Chemotherapy began, but with the added complication of a fine tube being implanted in his chest. This 'Hickman line' was to facilitate treatment and spare the veins.

The chemotherapy took place once a fortnight and was followed by several days of feeling sick when Jim was unable to work. But in between times he found he could teach, although at 'half-strength'. His employers were very understanding throughout. His pay was unaffected and he was not required to attend any meetings that were not vital. Work, in fact, helped him to cope with his illness. He felt that by resuming his normal activities, he was returning to the 'real world'. 'The visits to hospital were just a necessary interruption, rather like going to the dentist. You had to grin and bear it and then get back to work.'

That September, radiotherapy began and was to last for six weeks. Hair loss caused some loss of confidence, but when Jim decided to shave everything off and grow a beard, his trendy, arty appearance bolstered his self-confidence again. But the radiotherapy did leave him tired and listless and less ready to commute across London and to teach effectively. It was during this time that the support of colleagues was invaluable. Frequent phone calls and reassuring cards helped him feel that he was in touch with what was going on at work.

After a year of treatment and recovery, Jim was able to return to work, feeling pretty normal and, as each week went by and his confidence returned, he began to think of the future. Now, nine years later, he still returns to hospital for yearly check-ups and even pops in for a cup of coffee now and then to 'the most convenient cafe in London'. He remains very grateful for the excellent treatment and care he received.

Microscopes and Hodgkin's Lymphoma - Understanding the Pathophysiology of a Common Cancer

First off What is Lymphoma?

We have to first define what lymphoma is before discussing Hodgkin's disease. Lymphoma is a cancer that develops from cells in the body known as "lymphocytes." Lympocytes are a subcategory of white blood cells. There are two different types of lymphocytes: B-cells and T-cells. Almost all lymphomas, including Hodgkin's disease, stem from B-cells.

In Hodgkin's lymphoma a B-cell, for unknown reasons, becomes cancerous. The cell then makes many many clones of itself. These cells bundle together to form a solid tumor known as a lymphoma. There are several hypotheses for why these cells become cancerous in Hodgkin's. One belief is that infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV, the same virus that causes infectious mononucleosis) can cause the cells to turn malignant in genetically susceptible people. Other theories are that certain genetic translocations may be the underlying factor. As of yet, no particular theory has significant supporting data to call it the "cause." In fact, there may be multiple unrelated causes.

Types

There are different subcategories of Hodgkin's lymphoma. They are based on several microscopic characteristics, and are important in determining prognosis. The features the pathologist is looking for are the number of Reed-Sternberg cells, as well as the number of lymphocytes present in the biospy specimen. A Reed-Sternberg cell is a funny shaped cell with two nuclei that looks like owl's eyes.

The first subcategory, and most common type, is nodular sclerosing Hodgkin's lymphoma. In this type there are very few Reed-Sternberg cells with a moderate number of lymphocytes. It commonly occurs in younger individuals, and with treatment, the prognosis is excellent.

The second subcategory is mixed cellularity Hodgkin's lymphoma. This type has many Reed-Sternberg cells and a moderate number of lymphocytes when viewed under the microscope. It has an intermediate prognosis.

The third subcategory is lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin's. It has very few Reed-Sternberg cells and many lymphocytes. It occurs most commonly in males less than 35 years of age. It is also one of the few types that is not associated with Epstein-Barr virus infection.

The last subcategory is lymphocyte depleted. It is the rarest form of Hodgkin's lymphoma. It typically affects older males. Unfortunately it has the worst prognosis of the four types.

Finding a Cancer Cure Would Put the Cancer Care Industry Out of Business!

Legally, I can't tell you that monatomic gold cures cancer, even though scientific studies have shown that cancer patients taking monatomic gold have experienced improvement in their condition. If you want references, click on the link below. For now, I'll just relate my viewpoint based on what I've read and what I've experienced.

I've never had cancer, but my mom did. She died from the TREATMENT! Her father had cancer and died. My dad's mom had cancer and died. There's a lot of conjecture in the medical community as to the causes of cancer. Before the industrial revolution, cancer cases were rare. Many effective cancer treatment protocols were developed prior to 1950's, but these treatments were suppressed by the mainstream medical establishment at the behest of the pharmaceutical corporations. One natural cancer therapy that I can't legally tell you actually works is cottage cheese and flax oil. That's pretty simple, and totally non-toxic. Won't kill you like chemo-therapy might, like radiation probably will.

A mineral supplement derived from gold, called monatomic gold has been used by ancient cultures throughout earth's history as an aid in spiritual ascension. Modern scientific research has shown that subjects taking monatomic gold show an immediate increase in brain synchronization, leading to stress relief. Legally, I can't tell you that stress causes cancer. I also won't tell you that de-stressing will cure your cancer.

It's also been observed that monatomic gold repairs DNA. It's the DNA that tells the cells what to do, when and how to divide, whether to be healthy or unhealthy. Exposure to environmental toxins like petro-chemicals can damage the DNA, leading to cancer. Certain supplements have shown to aid in detoxification of these unnatural chemicals. Would you be surprised to discover that many pharmaceutical drugs are synthesized from petroleum? What connection do you think might exist between the petroleum industry and the pharmaceutical industry?

Before the prohibition era, Henry Ford produced automobiles designed to run on pure ethanol. John D. Rockefeller of Standard Oil fame used his influence to push for the prohibition of the sale of alcohol, not to stop people from drinking, but to shut down the fuel competition from Ford's ethanol production. Ford had filling stations that were ethanol-dedicated, garnering some 25% of the fuel sales in America. Then came prohibition. Ethanol is a clean-burning fuel, producing no toxic emissions. Petroleum based fuels and petroleum refinement to make gasoline and diesel fuel produces cancer causing toxic by-products. Some of these waste by-products are used in the manufacture of cancer drugs and other pharmaceutical drugs. Read the lists of side-effects! Jeesh!

It's time we grow up and start thinking for ourselves. Television gets most of it's ad revenue from drug ads! Television also uses subliminal messages to program the subconscious mind to action. It's also been discovered that brain-waves of television watchers are identical to brain-waves of subjects under hypnotic trance!

My experience taking monatomic gold is my mind is sharper. My dreams are more vivid, and I experience a greater since of synchronicity of experience. You know those "Aha!" moments? So, how might having access to a greater mental capacity effect your ability to handle health challenges? Do you think you might be able to better sort it out for yourself, rather than just blindly following the advice of some oncologist who has yacht payments to make?

If you'd like more data on high-quality monatomic minerals that I cannot legally tell you have helped many people with cancer, click on the link below. To life!

Writing Can Be a Source of Encouragement When Battling Cancer

My girlfriend seemed more concerned than I was. She thought wrongly that I didn't like doctors because I had studied natural medicine. To cut a longer story short I went to my local medical centre straight after work one evening and saw a general practitioner whom I'd met once before.

The practitioner was different to other doctors I had met in the past. He was gentle, soft spoken and spent more time with me and his patients than other doctors whom I had known. He also explained the problem to me and his other patients in a way that wasn't confronting or full of incomprehensible medical mumbo jumbo. In the long run I was glad that I developed a good relationship with this particular general practitioner.

When I told him my symptoms he said "we'd better check if there are any nasties there."

"Nasties?" I'd never heard that expression before and I assumed he was referring to parasites. That made sense! If I had somehow ingested some kind of parasite, it may have been sharing my food with me, or worse it may have been feeding on me from the inside. This would certainly cause weight loss.

The good doctor recommended I undergo some tests: Chest X-ray, ultra sound, blood tests. A bit extreme for parasites I thought. Anyway, I booked it at a local centre and underwent those tests. The following day I returned to work as usual.

A week later I returned to the doctor. He went over my blood test results and pointed out some the results that were over the normal range. He indicated there was a "nasty". Now I realised this no longer referred to parasites but to something else altogether. He also said my X-ray showed emphysema.

I was in some kind of a daze, and the first thing that came to my mind was "Well, I'll get to travel to the other side and discover what's there!" The "other side", life after death and reincarnation were all topics I had taken an interest in, and had become part of my graduate studies. I was referred to two specialists: One was a haematologist, the other an oncologist. Both these specialists concurred there I had some kind of "nasty" and that more investigations were necessary to determine exactly the kind of nasty it was. A day was set for my admission into hospital.

At this stage I thought I'd take a break from my job. I remember it had been more difficult to summon the energy to get into my day's work. On a few mornings I had sat in a nearby park after my bus and train ride to absorb some sunlight in the hope of absorbing some energy. The weather had been excellent. It was bright and sunny, and early enough in the day for it to not be too hot.

When I took a break from work I found that staying home offered little relief except that I didn't have to put up with public transport, and I suppose was a good thing. And then I was living with that underlying feeling of malaise that expressed itself as a confusion between extreme hunger and lack of appetite, and the feeling of weakness was there too.

Writing is a source of encouragement when battling cancer and I would like to write more about this particular experience.

Financial Support For Childhood Cancer

Stress and worry created by a childhood cancer diagnosis can increase with financial concerns. The impact on a family can create a financial burden that cannot be anticipated. Parents of children with cancer might experience a sharp decrease or loss of income, an increase in medical and personal expenses such as food, travel and lodging away from home, and inadequate insurance coverage that can create a significant financial strain.

Studies show that even families with full health insurance will spend 25 percent or more of their income on co-payments. Severe difficulties face families with no or little insurance. However, local and national organizations are available to help with a variety of resources so that major hardships might be avoided

Financial difficulties associated with a childhood cancer diagnosis can be hard to accept. Some families may feel uncomfortable accepting assistance, but most families need extra support during this time of extreme crisis. Most people want to know what they can do to help, but need guidance on how to give support. Letting others know what is needed benefits everyone. Financial assistance for a kid with cancer can make a difference by taking care of gas, meals or a few nights' lodging. Addressing the financial burden can reduce overall stress on the family, while providing opportunities for others to help in an otherwise helpless situation.

Cancer can cause heavy economic burdens on both patients and their families. Government-sponsored programs as well as services supported by nonprofit, national organizations are available for families who do not have health insurance and for those who have insurance but need more financial assistance to cover health care costs. Child cancer patients and their families should discuss any concerns about health care costs with their doctor, medical social worker, or the business office of their hospital or clinic.

Programs providing general assistance like food, housing, and other services may also be available from the county or city Department of Social Services

Next, discover different ways to uncover cancer financial assistance and financial support for kids with cancer.

Cancer Of The Lymph Nodes

Cancer of the lymph nodes, also known as lymphoma, will effect more men than women. With about 5 percent of all cancers, lymphoma is found to develop more frequently in people between the ages of 15 to 55.

There are between 500 to 700 lymph nodes in the body found in groups mostly in the neck, underarm, chest, abdomen and groin. These nodes are tiny rounded or bean shaped masses.

The two forms of cancer are affecting these nodules are, Hodgkins Disease and Non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Hodgkins Disease is a rare form presenting symptoms of night sweats, unexplained weight loss, unexplained fever and constant fatigue. Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, the most common, has the same symptoms as Hodgkins Disease. Regardless of gender, if there is a family history of this form of cancer, the risk increases. Non-Hodgkins lymphoma is believed to develop in people that have had a high exposure to herbicides and pesticides.

The lymph nodes are a part of the lymphatic system. Lymph, the fluid in this system originates as plasm, flows between cells delivering nutrients, oxygen and hormones to the cells. As it leaves the cells it removes excess fluid, dead blood cells, bacteria, viruses and all other waste material with it. These nodes will trap cancer cells, slowing the spread of the disease, until cancer overwhelms them.

Cancer can metastasize in other parts of the body by traveling either through the bloodstream or through the lymph nodes. When this happens the cancer will be still called by its origin, for instant papillary thyroid cancer or breast cancer, but with lymph node involvement.

The most common symptom or sign that cancer has spread to the nodes is that one or more of them are enlarged. With that said there are many other reasons this inflammation could happen, infection for instance. Your doctor will want to do a physical examination and blood and urine tests to rule out infection. For further screening diagnostic imaging to find the location of any tumors in the body will be done. A biopsy on the enlarged nodules may also be done either by surgery or by performing a fine needle aspiration.

Once all the diagnostic testing is complete the stage of the cancer can be determined. Staging of cancer is determined by the number of tumors, if they have spread and if so how intensely. Staging will assist the doctors determine treatment and the prognosis of the disease.

It is routine procedure when operating on an area of the body that has cancer like the thyroid or the breast, that suspicious and some normal lymph nodes are removed at the same time. These are all sent for biopsy. The pathology report will tell you how intensive the cancer of the lymph nodes is. In the case of papillary and follicular thyroid cancer the normal protocol, if the thyroid cancer is found in any of the nodes removed, is treatment with radioactive iodine will be required.

Like many cancers, when cancer of the lymph nodes is diagnosed in an early stage the better the prognosis. Today with all the medical advancements, there are many effective treatments available for this type of cancer.

Elaine Savard is a papillary thyroid survivor. You are invited to please go to http://www.papillarythyroidcancerguide.com/ for more on papillary thyroid cancer and how it is staged.

The Cancer You May Have

Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma Economic Impact is very obvious in patients who lose their jobs due to this dreadful disease. Man hour lost to sick leaves and cost of health insurance to employers are also economic wastes. All these impact negatively on both the patient and society.

Lymphoma can appear in different forms with symptoms that appear like those of other ailments. This is why the need to use various types of techniques for lymphoma diagnosis arises. Which is why only the doctor who specializes in medical diagnosis should handle its identification.

A critical look at the lymphoid lesions will be carried out to identify the presence of possible cancerous cells by investigating the structural traits, along with the genetic constitution and what the organ looks like as a consequence of the interaction of its genotype and the environment.

If lymphoma manifests in an aids patient it means that the disease has already gain ground. If this happens treatment could be through oral drugs or by way of injections aimed to attack the disease via your bloodstream. It is called Systemic chemotherapy.

But unfortunately, most lymphoma patients either were not properly diagnosed or under-treated. A recent shocker was the discovery from haphazardly chosen medical establishments nationwide that 50 percent of patients with curable lymphoma are being given under- treatment with chemotherapy leading to poor response and recovery. This happens at a time when even Cell marker tests can reveal the presence of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

This test can be used to identify Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma subtypes. It can also detect whether the lymphoma is caused by abnormal activity of B-cells or T-cells. If you suspect that you have lymphoma or any of your family have once suffered lymphoma, get tested regularly to ensure that you do not have the disease.

What is Lymphoma Cancer?

The lymphatic system is comprised of the lymph, lymph vessels, lymph nodes, bone marrow, spleen, and liver. The lymph is the fluid that circulates in the lymphatic system and travels through the body via lymph vessels. The fluid contains lymphocytes - produced by the bone marrow and spleen -that fight pathogens. These cells filter the blood and collect the microorganisms inside lymph nodes. You'll notice that during infections, you will have a palpable node in your neck, under your arms, breasts, and groin. When the pathogens are overwhelmed, toxins and byproducts produced by these cells are then filtered in the liver to be eliminated.

In lymphoma cancer, the problem lies in the lymphocytes, specifically the B-lymphocytes and T-lymphocytes. Hodgkin's lymphoma is a type of lymphoma cancer where the B-lymphocytes have the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells under morphological studies. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, on the other hand, is a type of lymphoma that occurs without the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells. The malignant cells increase in number and size, resulting to a pooling of cells inside a lymph node. The lymph node formed will be rubbery, painless, and does not show any signs of disappearing. Lymphoma cancer is also noted with night sweats, unexplained weight loss, and unexplained fever. There are patients diagnosed with lymphoma but still live for more than 5 to 10 years, making this one of the most curable forms of cancer known to man. Biopsy of the tumor is the definitive way in diagnosing lymphoma. Imaging tests such as X-Ray, CT-Scan, and MRI along with blood tests are done in order to stage the severity of lymphoma cancer.

Treatment of lymphoma cancer can be a form or mix of radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Radiation therapy is done during the early stage, and applied only on a local area where the malignancy is noted. When the malignancy has spread in adjacent and distal parts of the body, chemotherapy is used along with immune-stimulants and corticosteroids such as prednisone. Surviving lymphoma is highly dependent on the stage when the lymphoma was diagnosed and the application of appropriate treatment. Always maintain your regular check up to see if your treatment is appropriate for you, and to monitor how the lymphoma cancer is progressing.

Lessons Learned From Cancer

Cancer is an insidious illness that touches way too many people. When faced with this disease, you basically have two choices: to go through the experience kicking and screaming or to learn and grow through the illness.

Cancer has taught me that I need to establish boundaries in my life. I learned to look out for my needs first, because without a healthy and strong mind and body, I cannot be at my best for anyone else.

Cancer has taught me that we should never take good health for granted. I used to be like so many other people when I said, "All I want is a healthy baby" or "Life is nothing without your health." Of course, I meant it. But, I really didn't understand the magnitude of these statements until my own struggles with cancer.

I'm a huge believer that the best physicians have a fine tuned sense of intuition. There are times when they just know they have to walk away from the data and follow their gut. But, even intuition has its basis in fact. If we, as patients, don't take the time to tell our physician all the symptoms we are experiencing, he or she doesn't have all the information they need to make a proper diagnosis.

I've learned that the human spirit is virulent. I am thrilled to see that many of our nation's medical schools are now acknowledging the human spirit within their classrooms. They have learned that strong support systems, a good attitude, and prayer affect the overall survival of their patients. They are acknowledging that it is not just science, but also the human spirit, that can affect a patient's future.

For years, alternative medicine - massage therapy, proper nutrition, chiropractic medicine - were not viewed as part of mainstream medicine. But, today, more and more physicians are beginning to understand their power. As such, students in medical schools across the country are learning about alternative medicine within their course curriculum. Oncologists will now put you in touch with nutritionists or send you to chiropractors to help ease your pain.

I'm amazed at how much more accommodating I am of grumpy people these days. Mainly, this is driven by the realization that I don't know what's going on in their personal lives. They might be waging their own battle against cancer. They may be struggling with a divorce, death, or a job loss. Having cancer has taught me to be more tolerant of people and to accept that they may be carrying a load of troubles on their back that we are unaware of.

Out of all of the lessons that cancer has taught me, the bottom line is this: we can all make our world a better place to live if we just lend a hand to others in need.

Sue Northey was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in December of 1998. After undergoing both radiation and chemotherapy, she was deemed cancer-free in September 1999 and has remained in complete remission since.

Sue's first book, Pilgrim Prayers for People Living with Cancer, was published in September 2004 by The Pilgrim Press. Her second book, On The Other Side: The Journey of a Cancer Survivor, was published in January 2007 by Whiskey Creek Press.

Sue has received two special awards that recognize her concerted efforts towards raising awareness and funds for cancer research. The Wisconsin Business Journal honored her as Milwaukee's Woman of Influence in 2002 in the Inspirational Leader category and the Association for Women in Communications honored Sue as The Leading Change Business Leader in 2004.

New T-Cell Therapy May Be a Powerful Cancer Fighter

Researchers have been working hard to find a way to use the body's own t-cell's to fight cancer and destroy it. Clinical trials have been conducted and some people who were participants have gone into complete remission using this exciting and novel new approach. This is known as "gene therapy" and researchers have been working furiously for years trying to find ways to utilize the body's own cells to be reprogrammed to fight and destroy cancer cells.

A clinical trial held at The University of Pennsylvania involved providing this treatment to participants who suffered from leukemia. One participant in particular, a man who had suffered from leukemia participated in the trial and it turned his life around for the better. Chemotherapy was no longer effective for his disease. A few weeks after this treatment, he was in complete remission with no trace of cancer to be found. It is now a year later and he is still completely cancer free. There were an additional two patients who participated in this trial. One had another complete remission of the leukemia and the third participant had a partial remission result. These results are extremely promising and plans are being made for further gene therapy trials.

The Procedure: This trial involved the removal of billions of a person's T-cells. T- cells are one of the white cells in the human body whose function is to fight and destroy viruses and tumors. Once these t-cells are removed they are genetically reprogrammed with new genes. These new genes actually teach the t-cells to seek out and destroy cancer in the human body. They are then reinjected back into the patient.

The doctors who are part of the trial are not stating yet that this is a cure. They say the treatment is still experimental and has only involved a few patients. This trial has been written about in The New England Journal of Medicine and Science Translational Medicine. Many researchers are very excited about it and feel it is a significant achievement in the field of gene therapy to fight cancer.

This procedure basically was able to use a person's own immune system to kill cancer cells. Researchers are now trying to determine if other types of cancer might also be responsive to this gene therapy.

The doctors leading this study and trial said they were also stunned by the results of complete remission. Although this is still experimental at this point, researchers hope to replicate this study again and see how it responds to other types of cancer.

Tumor Destruction by T-cells: Scientists are trying to determine how to make these modified t-cells destroy tumors. This particular research study done at The University of Pennsylvania appears to have been able to accomplish this by leaving a population of "memory" t-cells" within the body that will be able to remultiply when needed, as they will recognize the development of cancerous cells.

This gene therapy concept of genetically modifying the body's t-cells really began in the 1980s with research conducted in Israel. Over the years much research has continued to occur in this area and it appears that scientists are making great progress. Researchers are hopeful that one day soon, these "cancer killer" t-cells" will effectively destroy cancer and be available as a therapy option for people suffering from this dreadful disease.

Potential Dangers of T-Cell Therapy: Although this research is incredibly promising there are certain dangers still inherent to it. A person may become vunerable to infection because the treatment will destroy both healthy and cancerous cells simultaneously, in this leukemia case wiping out a patient's entire B-cell population. Doctors are providing these patients with precautions such as periodic infusions of immune building substances to prevent infections from occurring.

Another danger could be the overwhelming number of cancer cells that can die off all at once. This can overwhelm the liver and kidneys and lead to "tumor lyses", a potentially deadly reaction. Doctors are working on this problem by providing drugs which will help protect the kidneys while this process is occurring.

Additionally there may be other reactions which may be life threatening because everybody is unique and the modified t-cells can target cancer cells anywhere in the body. Therefore if there is cancer in the lungs, the lungs may become overwhelmed and the patient can develop breathing problems which can be dangerous. Additionally side effect reactions that occur from this treatment include high fevers and inflammation.

The Future: Researchers are very excited about the future of genetically modified t-cell therapy in treating and even destroying cancer. Although it may be years away, the hope is to perfect the therapy and make it available to anyone who may benefit from it. Many hurdles still exist including how this treatment could be massed produced by the pharmaceutical industry. Until that time, researchers continue to work hard and are grateful for the astonishing results of complete remission they have already achieved in several patients suffering from leukemia.

How to Know If You Have Lymph Node Cancer?

Different cancers affect about 1 in 3 people in the world. We all know someone who has had a cancer or is suffering from it now. Like with most diseases, it is easiest to treat if discovered early. But how should one know the signs?

Lymphoma is kind of a cancer that affects our lymphatic system and causes a tumor to develop in our lymph nodes, that is why it is often referred to as a lymph node cancer. When you are affected by lymphoma you will develop swelling in your lymphatic nodes. The swelling is often painless and can be anywhere on your body- in the groin, neck or even armpits. But be aware, not all the swelling in your nodes means that you have developed a cancer. Swelling in these areas of your body can develop also after other infections and is mostly harmless.

If these symptoms last for longer than few weeks, you should see a local doctor, who is able to diagnose you properly. If your doctor thinks that you may have lymphoma, he will send you to an oncologist, who will make the necessary test to find out if you have this disease and what exactly can be done.

Like most other cancers, lymphoma could be treated with either a bone marrow transplantation, chemotherapy or sometimes radiotherapy. Lymphoma is a secretive cancer that develops slowly over time and hits you when you least expect it. However like most cancers, if discovered at an early stage, it is mostly treatable.

To read more about Lymph Node Cancer please visit our website where you will find all the relevant information about this disease. Don't wait before it is too late, take action today!

Lymph Node Cancer website brings you all the information you need know about lymph node cancer (lymphoma) and what are the causes, symptoms and treatment options out there.

Multiple Myeloma, a Blood Plasma Cancer, and the Arkansas Treatment

Within the last 20 years, the Arkansas Treatment has been developed for patients suffering from Multiple Myeloma. An acquaintance of the author's, who was treated with this chemotherapy regimen several years before his own diagnosis, had to travel to Arkansas to receive the treatment. After being diagnosed in June, 2008 with multiple myeloma, the author was able to receive this chemotherapy regimen locally near his home in the Upstate of South Carolina.

This treatment uses several different drugs during chemotherapy, followed by an autologous stem cell transplant. The full treatment actually calls for a tandem stem cell transplant (two in succession.) Whereas years ago, the only treatment for multiple myeloma was the drug that directly targets the cancerous cells (and then also targets lots of good cells as well), the several drugs used in this treatment all target the abilities of the cancerous cells to reproduce and encourage the body's normal disease fighting cells to eliminate them.

This treatment uses thalidomide as the main, cancer-fighting, oral drug, plus a cocktail of chemotherapy drugs which include bortezomib, cyclophosphamide, etoposide, cisplatin, doxorubicin, and dexamethasone. A variety of other drugs such as antibiotics, to help the body's impaired immune system, anti-nausea drugs, and pain killers (steroids) are administered concurrently.

With the older treatments directly targeting the cancerous cells, the life expectancies of multiple myeloma patients were on the order of two to four years following diagnosis. Since those drugs adversely affected many good body cells as well as the cancerous cells, the patients' bodies took a major hit every time the drug was administered. A high dose of that same drug (or similar ones) is part of the stem cell transplant procedure. Following the administration of the high dose drug, the author's white blood cell count was near zero. Fortunately, the stem cell transplant immediately followed the administration of the high dose, so his body was able to recover from the high dose by creating new stem cells and new good blood cells.

Newer treatments such as the Arkansas Treatment use drugs that target the cancerous cells indirectly. They attempt to turn OFF the ON switch that tells the cancerous cells to reproduce ad infinitum. They attempt to block blood supplies which allow the cancerous cells to flourish. They attempt to block signals sent from the cancerous cells to normal body disease-fighting cells that says, in effect, "I am a normal cell -- leave me alone." They attempt to encourage the body's disease-fighting cells to go after those cancerous cells and do their jobs -- that is, to eliminate them as unwanted cells in the body. Obviously, this is a layman's explanation of the tasks requested of the drugs in this treatment regimen, but you get the idea.

Since these drugs are not directly expected to kill the cancerous cells, they are much less harmful to the good cells of the body. This does not mean they are harmless to normal body cells. They still are quite potent chemicals that should not be used lightly. But they appear to each work well to perform the jobs requested of them. Life expectancies of patients receiving the Arkansas treatment are listed as ten plus years, and climbing.

Major side effects occur with this treatment regimen, but they appear to be worth the inconveniences. In the author's case, the two major side effects are deterioration of the heart muscle, and peripheral neuropathy. The author's heart efficiency deteriorated sufficiently over the course of treatment that he was prevented from receiving the second stem cell transplant. Having read lots of information on the internet prior to and during treatments, he somehow missed the possibility that the chemo drugs could adversely affect the heart muscle. The efficiency of his left ventricle went from normal values above 50% all the way down to 26%. At this low level, he was treated for congestive heart failure. The cardiologist said, however, that in many cases, the heart can recover from chemo-induced levels like this. This, in fact, has happened in the author's case. His heart's efficiency has risen once again to near-normal levels.

After the heart's efficiency problems were diagnosed, the author searched for and found several articles that did indeed warn that some of the chemo drugs used in this regimen can adversely affect the heart muscle. One of the drugs, in particular, was listed as prone to causing heart problems. When he asked one of the chemo nurses which of the medications could adversely affect the heart, she answered, "Oh, they probably all do."

The peripheral neuropathy is a major nuisance, but it does not appear to be a life-threatening problem. The author's fingers and toes all tingle and feel somewhat numb most of the time. The cancer drugs, and even the cancer maintenance drugs, appeared to cause these problems. After the main cancer medications were stopped, the tingling and numbness receded a little, but not completely. There were days following the chemo treatments when the author's hands hurt -- especially when holding or touching cold items. Today, they are tingly but that sensation can be ignored most of the time.

The author's body is currently "as clean of the cancerous cells as possible," according to his oncologist. This doctor also commented during that visit that many don't appreciate the gravity of that statement. "Years ago, half of the people who contracted multiple myeloma died within 3 years of diagnosis." Those numbers are greatly extended now due to chemo regimens like the Arkansas Treatment.

Dennis Dinger is a survivor of multiple myeloma. Diagnosed in June, 2008, he received five cycles of the Arkansas Treatment: four of chemotherapy, plus the fifth -- the high dose and the autologous stem cell transplant. His book, My Bout with Multiple Myeloma, chronicles his battle - to include the year prior to diagnosis, the treatments, and the recuperation period following all treatments. Throughout 2010, the cancer was in complete remission. For more details on the book, click on Multiple Myeloma.

In this book, he includes descriptions of most of the procedures to which he was subject, he gives helpful hints and suggestions to others who may have to deal with this or other cancers. The book was written for those who have been similarly diagnosed, as well as for their family members and friends who may be called upon to support their loved ones through similar battles.

Dennis Dinger is a Christian who is a Professor Emeritus of Ceramic and Materials Engineering at Clemson University.

Since his cancer diagnosis and treatments, he has been spending his days studying and writing Christian books. His most recent book attempts to bridge the chasm between technology and Christianity. Childhood Cancer Diagnosis - What Next?

There you stand, either in the pediatrician's office or the emergency room, receiving the most horrific news imaginable that being the news that your child has a life threatening disease.

As most doctors do they tell you they are going to give you and your family a moment to digest what you have just been told. As you then look upon your child, who is looking up at you, confused and scared, you are hit with a barrage of questions. Why, how, and what next?

After the doctors have concluded the seemingly endless barrage of tests on your child, he/she and the rest of the medical staff give you the infamous "road map." This road map is supposed to tell you how your child will be treated depending on their disease and the severity of said disease. Often this road map leaves you with more questions than answers.

Then your child is finally released from the hospital and sent home to await your next visit to the surgical room, infusion center, and clinic for labs or wherever your chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments are conducted. It is this down time that a familiar question comes floating back into your mind.... What next?

What next? Information gathering, entrust your child to the doctor, pray to God? It is imperative to learn as much about your child's illness as possible. Learn the affects, side effects, pros and cons of each drug used. Do not be afraid to question everything the medical staff is doing. If it doesn't make sense, ask for explanations, clarification and reconfirm with other medical staff. Do not overlook your parental instincts after all, you know your child the best and do not allow someone else to tell you otherwise. At first they may try to back you down or appease you and may even try to confuse you with medical jargon, but soon they will realize that you are not the kind of parent that sits on the sidelines and gives the doctors carte blanche in the faith and trust department. It is only through this vigilance that your child will receive the best treatment possible. You must be your child's patient advocate.

Diagnosing Lymph Node Cancer

Lymph node cancer or lymphoma is a serious medical condition, and if you are suspecting of having this disease you should see your doctor immediately. Unlike many other cancers that are found in tumors only in specific location in the body, lymph node cancer usually spreads through the body.

When you first get lymphoma, you will most likely suffer from swollen lymph nodes. They can appear pretty much anywhere- underarms, groin and even in your neck. However, swelling is quite common with many other diseases, so in order to diagnose you properly doctor must do a biopsy.

Biopsy means that a part of your node is removed surgically and then studied in the laboratory. In most cases biopsy for lymphoma can be done under local anesthetic. After that pathologist will examine your tissue sample in the laboratory to see if your cells have been affected by cancer. If that is the case he will identify the exact type of lymphoma you are suffering from. There are 43 types of lymphomas, and your doctor needs to find out which type you have to treat you properly.

Once the biopsy has been done, and your test results come back positive, your doctor will carry out more tests to find out the extent of the spread. Like with many other types of cancer, disease development is divided into 4 groups- stage 1 being the least advanced and stage 4 being the most advanced. Depending on how far your cancer has spread different treatment methods will be considered.

If you are suspecting of having this type of cancer yourself, or would like to know more about this disease you need to visit Lymph Node Cancer. Info to find out how this cruel sickness may affect you, or at lease put your mind at ease if you don't suffer from Lymphoma.

Lymph Node Cancer website brings you all the information you need know about lymph node cancer (lymphoma) and what are the causes, symptoms and treatment options out there.

What Cancer Patients Must Be Aware Of

One of the greatest mysteries on earth is the occurrence of cancer. It has been known worldwide and almost all human beings are very much terrified when it comes to this issue. It is also one of the most leading types of illness that has killed millions of people in just a short period of time. It has been discovered by the scientist long time ago but its birth still remains a mystery even up to this moment.

Scientists and doctors are trying their very best to trace the origin of cancer. The information and researches about this type of disease can be found in books and even in the internet. There are already millions of articles about cancer and its causes that have been published in order to inform the public. There are also several campaigns that are being introduced to the public to fight cancer. Their main objective is to make people aware that cancer does not choose its victims. It can occur to any person regardless of your age or race.

Almost all people have something to comment or say about cancer. There are rooms of information that has been shared to the public. Some of these bunches of information are true and some are not. Even though some people are not well-informed about the origins and causes of cancer they are still aware with the idea that this type of disease can truly bring them to death. In fact they are thinking that there is no cure for cancer. They also believe that a person with cancer has nothing to hope for. They are misguided with the idea that once you already have cancer you will no longer live a longer and normal life.

It is indeed true that it is very difficult to have cancer. This kind of disease has something to do with genetics. This type of illness runs in the family. It can be inherited by any member of the family. It is because cancer cells can also penetrate the DNA of a patient. Children whose parents were diagnosed with cancer have a higher possibility to develop or acquire cancer.

One of the oldest method or ways to treat cancer is chemotherapy. It is the process of getting rid of cancer cells using specific types of drugs. Drugs that are being used during chemotherapy are intended to slow down or even destroy and stop the growth of cancer cells in the body. It has been used as one of the most effective ways of treating cancer.

Nowadays scientist managed to discover a new way of treating cancer with the help of technology. One of the latest methods of preventing cancer cells is radiation. Radiation has been known to eliminate and destroy cancer cells in a short period of time. A therapy using radiation has been introduced to patients with this kind of illness especially those who are suffering from prostate cancer. The good thing about radiation is that it can specifically target and get rid of cancer cells.

You should be more cautious about your health. If you experience the early symptoms of prostate cancer you must be aware with its negative effects. The only way to survive from this type of disease is to know about the its latest treatments, never take it for granted. You should not avoid yourself from the medical experts. Leukemia - The Most Misunderstood Cancer

Most people perceive Leukemia as being cancer of the blood. This is partly true, but it is a lot more than that. It actually starts in the tissue that produces blood, resulting in abnormal white cells. These don't die as normal blood cells do, and swamp the normal red and white cells and also the platelets, making these cells difficult to do their jobs. These abnormal white cells are actually called Leukemia cells and if they carry on crowding out the normal cells and platelets cause the untimely death of the sufferer.

There are two main kinds of Leukemia, each defined by the way it develops and the speed with which it progresses. These are chronic and acute, which progress slowly and rapidly respectively. In the early stages of Chronic Leukemia, the abnormal cells are still able to work alongside the normal cells, albeit at a reduced rate. As there are no early presentable symptoms, this type is generally diagnosed at a routine health check. In the later stages, when the abnormal cells have reached a critical point, suffers may notice that their lymph nodes are swollen or repeated infections. The abnormal cells in Acute Leukemia can't do any of the work of the normal cells, and they can increase at an alarming rate. These two kinds of Leukemia are then split into further types depending on where they present themselves. The types that appears in the Lymphoid cells are Lymphocytic, Lymphoid or Lymphoblastic. The Leukemias in the Myeloid cells are Myelogenous, Myeloid or Myeloblastic.

There is still no proven reason why some people develop Cancer and those with he same lifestyle don't. Although many have theories it is still a medical mystery. Smoking is widely regarded as a major cause of Cancer, in this case acute Myeloid Leukemia, but there are many non smokers who develop it, and many smokers who don't. Inherited diseases are also thought to play a part, and there sometimes seems to be a family link with Cancer, but unfortunately it still seems to be a lottery as to who will develop Cancer and who won't. It is a fact that many who would be classed as high risk will never develop a Cancer during their lifetime, and this is what is so scary about this ferocious disease.

There are many different kinds of Leukemia treatment, mainly depending on the type. Your age also plays a factor in the treatment, and whether or not the Leukemia cells were present in the fluid produced from a spinal tap. The main treatments are targeted therapy, chemotherapy, biological therapy, stem cell or bone marrow transplant and radiotherapy. As with all Cancers, early diagnosis is vital, something that can be very difficult in Chronic Leukemia.

We should all do what we can to stay fit and healthy so that our bodies continue to do their job effectively, but sadly there are no guarantees that we won't develop Leukemia at some stage. Research is constant and treatment continues to improve, but all we can really do is hope that none of us develop this cruel disease.

Leukemia: A Blood Cancer

Leukemia, as being defined, is a bone marrow disorder which occurs when there is an abnormal increase of white blood cells, one of the blood cell types which main function is to fight against invading bacteria and viruses. When this blood cell abnormality arises, it can bring two harmful effects to the body.
This leads to improper maturity of the white blood cells (WBC) as they develop. As a result, it deteriorates body's immune system as it weakens the ability of WBC to fight against infections. This may pack the bone marrow resulting to no room for platelets and red blood cells which also have essential functions to the body.

Two Types of Leukemia

This needs immediate treatment as this rapidly increases the progress of the malignant cells. This the common form usually experience by children who have leukemia.

This does not always require immediate treatment as it develops the cancer cells gradually. However, regular checkup is advised to control the symptoms of the disease. This form is commonly experience by the older ones and is seldom cured.

Signs and Symptoms of Leukemia

Leukemia has imprecise symptoms but patients may experience some of these symptoms.
HeadachesUnexplained loss of weightBleeding from nose and gumsBone pain with unknown causesSkin rashFever, night sweats, chills and other flu-likeEasy bruisingBlood in urineFatigueStomach fullnessFrequent viral or bacterial infections

What causes leukemia?

According to studies, there are several factors which cause leukemia.

Carcinogens are chemicals present in food which can trigger the cancer cells.

Leukemia is believed to have been caused by some viral infections.

Leukemia is a hereditary ailment which tends to occur in some families.

How to treat Leukemia?

There are several treatment options on leukemia. These include:
ChemotherapySurgeryBone marrow transplantBiological therapyRadiation therapyInnovative treatments

What Is Lymphatic Cancer (Lymphoma) and Its Treatment Effects?

Lymphoma is the cancer of lymph nodes. Like all cancers, it is the uncontrolled growth of cells in the vicinity of lymph nodes. Lymph nodes can be viewed as stopping points of lymphatic system. Lymphatic system basically carries fighting soldiers to whatever areas of your body whenever the body area is invaded or requires help to fight foreign intruders. The lymphatic system is a network of 'highways' starting from below the chin to the back of the neck, to underneath the armpits and then to the groin area and connects to the spinal cord.

Lymphoma develops as lumps at the node areas, typically behind the neck, armpits and groin areas. Not all lymphomas grow in detectable areas. Once a lump develops careful monitoring is required. Whenever a lump occurs, it can be caused by

1) viral infection, which can be easily cured by a course of antibiotics and usually last only a week or two,
2) Tuberculosis, which detected at early stages can easily be cured, and which will require more specialized medical care and treatment,
3) Cancer, which can only be confirmed by a biopsy. If there are several lumps that have been growing for some time, it is vital to get the lumps checked out by a Hematologist. Hematologists are specialized doctors dealing with blood disorders. Lymphoma is considered as a blood disorder. For other types of cancer, one would go to an oncologist.

Other noticeable signs are cold sweats at night, lost of appetite, drastic weight loss and lethargy. Sometimes these signs do not appear as in my case except for the lumps on base of the neck.
Like many other cancers, lymphomas are quite complicated and have different types and subtypes but generally lymphoma can be divided into two broad categories, namely Hodgkins and Non-Hodgkins. Hodgkins lymphoma is much more curable and the prognosis is very good.

Conventional treatment applies for Lymphoma - surgery and radiation - if the cancer is fairly isolated typically only in stage 1 (more on staging later). Chemotherapy followed by radiation for cancer that is not so widespread in the body. If the cancer is in a fairly advanced stage as in stage 3 and 4, then a full course of Chemotherapy treatment is required, as was in my case.

Staging in lymphoma is different from other types of cancer. Stage 1 is cancer found on one part in one section of the body either above or below the diaphragm. If the cancer has appeared in more than one place on same side of the diaphragm, then it has gone to stage 2. Stage 3 means the cancer has spread to the abdomen and groin areas above and below the diaphragm. Stage 4 means that the cancer has been detected in the bone marrow. Stage 3 is already considered advanced stage.

Once a biopsy has confirmed that a tumour is cancerous, a CT scan is usually performed to stage the cancer. In lymphomas, a bone marrow tap is usually done to check if the bone marrow carries the cancer as well. CT scans are also performed at regular intervals during Chemotherapy to determine the treatment's efficacy. If the current treatment is not effective, doctors will switch to another Chemotherapy regimen. At the end of the treatment, a final CT scan and PET scan are conducted to confirm absence of cancerous cells. The words "No cancerous cells detected" are the sweetest words one can ask for.

Chemotherapy treatment can last between six to eight months and a month more to recuperate from the onslaught of Chemotherapy. Most people will give up work to focus on the treatment. As in my case, Chemotherapy was once every two weeks. The first week immediately after Chemotherapy is the worst.

Most of the time, I was too weak to keep awake. As time passed, strength returned and by the second week, I could manage a short walk. After that the whole process starts all over again.
Towards the end of the Chemotherapy, the body would have been pretty badly savaged by the Chemo poison. One often lands up feeling very different after Chemotherapy, and it takes months to get back toany normalcy. The speed of recovery from Chemotherapy really depends on one's physical and mental strength.

Chemotherapy, as it is often called - "It is a marathon"

A Brief Guide to Lymph Node Cancer

Did you know that about 5% of all cancers are composed of lymph node cancer? Also known as lymphoma, this condition affects both men and women, commonly within the age range of 15 to 54. Between the sexes though, men are more likely to have it. Lymph node cancer is also known as lymphoma. This pertains to the cancers that start in the lymphatic tissues. The lymphatic tissues include the lymph glands (or nodes), adenoids, tonsils, spleen, bone marrow, and the vessels, which connect them. Although a lot of cancers spread to the lymphatic system in the long run, lymphomas are different because they originate from the system itself.

The two main categories of lymphomas are Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL).

Hodgkin's Lymphoma

This lymphoma is characterized by the presence of the malignant cells known as the Reed-Sternberg cells. It affects about 3 in every 100,000 Americans; mainly between the age range of 15 to 40.

Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma

This type of lymphoma is slightly more common than the first type especially among kids who are below 15 years old. It is typified by the malignant growth of a specific white blood cell or lymphocytes.

High Risk People

Some people have higher risk in developing lymphoma. They are often the ones with serious immune deficiencies or those who have undergone immunosuppressive medications after going through an organ transplant. Those who have also gone chemotherapy or radiation treatments may also have a higher risk in having the condition later in life.

Diagnosis

Lymph node cancer may be diagnosed by the doctor during a routine check up or when you set an appointment to have some swollen nodules checked. Your doctor will conduct a thorough physical exam on you as well as blood and imaging tests. If you have inflamed lymph nodes for no obvious reason like an infection, he or she will observe the nodule if it will continue to grow. If despite after taking antibiotics, the node remains swollen, the doctor would likely perform a biopsy. This can affirm or deny the presence of lymphoma in your system.

Treatment

Once the doctor diagnoses you with lymph node cancer, he or she will immediately recommend the most effective treatment that you must go undergo. As cancers have stages, the treatment course would depend on how advanced your case is. The methods available for fighting lymphoma are chemotherapy, radiation therapy, bone marrow transplant, and biological response modifier therapy.

Lymphoma Cancer Survival Rate - Is There a New Cure?

The lymphoma cancer survival rate depends greatly on many factors. Typically, the survival rate is given in percentages during time frames. That is not an accurate prognosis, and you shouldn't be looking at it. Research is constantly conducted in the field of lymphoma and currently there is a very effective new way to put the cancer in remission.

The survival rate depends on the type of lymphoma. On average, 50% of lymphoma patients get cure, either by chemotherapy, or by spontaneous remission. Since now we have the new natural treatment option, the future survival rate of lymphoma patients will depend largely on how many people learn about the new treatment option. Chemotherapy has many side effects, and is generally speaking ineffective for treating lymphoma cancer. The lymphoma is one of the slowest spreading cancers, but it is also the one with the most profound symptoms, which makes it extremely difficult to live with.

Statistics show that most patients get cured of lymphoma cancer during their 4th-7th year of being sick. Now we know that the reason for that is spontaneous remission. We also know that 'spontaneous' is synonymic for 'idiopathic'. That means that the person usually did something very specific to rid themselves of the cancer, they are just not aware of it. Lymphoma gets cured by the body, and it is the only mechanism in existence, that can cure cancer. External intrusive procedures do not work. In rare cases, surgery can be done to remove cancerous tumors, but that is not effective when it comes to lymphoma. Generally speaking, the information on cancer is very controversial, because medical companies are trying to promote their products, which rarely work and often require daily administration. That is an effective business model, but the end result is nonexistent and people keep living with the cancer.

One of the most useful things is looking at stories of people who suffered from lymphoma, but got cured without apparent reason. When you look at countless such cases, certain patterns emerge and that can be used as the base of a new cure. That is exactly what researchers recently did, and its the reason why the melanoma cancer survival rate depends mostly on how informed people are of the new cures that can be used.

Here is the most effective natural approach to put lymphoma in remission, which anyone can easily apply: http://www.squidoo.com/lymphoma1.
